Project: Business Letter and Memo
Someday you'll have to go out into the world and get a job. Though that day may be a little far off, it's never too early to practice professional communication. This project will give you the opportunity to do just that. You will write a business letter.
Objectives
Instructions:
Write a letter to the Virtual Program Coordinator, Mrs. Wilt, asking for information about Haven Virtual Academy and its program (5 West Avenue C, Partridge, KS 67566). As you write your business letter, be sure to include all the proper elements. Refer to the list on the OW page as you begin writing.

Project: Paraphrasing
Paraphrasing requires active reading. You must do more than simply scan or skim a passage in order to put it in your own words. If you can paraphrase an article, you can be sure that you are retaining the information and getting the "gist" of it. This project is an opportunity to practice your paraphrasing skills.

Report: Summarizing
An important part of being an active reader is being able to summarize main ideas and key points. This project will give you an opportunity to practice summarizing an informational text.
Objectives
A summary is a brief statement that explains the meaning of something much longer. First, try to think of two or three words that explain the article's meaning. Then, try to create a sentence or two that briefly retells the main focus of the material. If you are asked to summarize an article, you must be sure that the brief statement covers the main idea of the entire passage rather than isolating one particular point or a part of the article.

Then type a summary statement of the key points of the article. Remember a good summary is about one-third the length of the original material. Make sure your essay contains no errors in conventions such as spelling and grammar errors.
