5. Essay: Autobiography
Frederick Douglass's biography is an important historical text. However, it records not just historical events, but it gives the reader a sense of Douglass's personality and also reflects a theme. This project will include analyzing one of these elements.
Objectives
- Write a literary response essay. See instructions below.
Instructions:
1. On your first page write a few sentences explaining what you feel is the theme of Frederick Douglass's autobiography.
2. On your second page write a short autobiography of your own about ONE IMPORTANT EVENT in YOUR life. You should have a title, a beginning, middle, and end. The beginning should include a **topic sentence that tells the readers what the essay will contain. The end should summarize it all. You should have three paragraphs.
Example beginning: When I turned twenty I decided to join a missionary program in Canada. Before I could go I had to raise support to pay for my living expenses. I began writing to area churches and talking to friends about support.... Begin with an opening and then continue on with the essay... Do NOT say, "I am going to tell you about....." Instead just start in with an opening sentence that will grab the reader's attention, and then keep going with your story. :)

Essay: The Informal Essay
From OW:
You will begin by choosing a topic suitable for an informal essay. If you can, design the essay to be about something you are interested in. Informal essays allow you to be a little more relaxed. They are great way to express your personality by telling a silly or light-hearted story. "The High Dive" is just one example of countless informal essays. Remember some of the techniques that the author uses as you might want to do something similar in an essay of your own.
Take a minute to think about your interests. Usually, light-hearted or humorous topics work best for an informal essay, but start by asking yourself some of the following questions. They may help you to think of an idea.
It is helpful to write a short outline to organize what you plan to say. Then you will write your essay. Your informal essay for this assignment should have at least THREE paragraphs and cover your topic well.
**Remember if you complete research for your topic, you will need to have a separate Works Cited page to record your sources.
Please use the help note if you have questions or need some direction on choosing a topic.
