UNIT 4 NOTES: (Read through this info to help you review.)
In the second part of this unit you will study the four steps to a well written report and you will take at least some of these steps yourself. We may not do all of the projects so make sure you just look for the ones that are assinged to you.
The four steps are:
(1) selecting a topic
(2) gathering information
(3) outlining information
(4) writing from the outline
Follow the "interest inventory" plan in selecting a topic of interest.
After you have chosen a topic, create a "learn" list. In this list you will write all the ideas you already know about the topic, and you will write a list of questions that show what you want to learn about the topic.
Then you will learn about finding the purpose and audience. Before you begin gathering information on your topic, you need to answer two very important questions about your topic:
Why am I writing?
To whom am I writing?

Follow the "interest inventory" plan in selecting a topic of interest.
- List ten subjects you think are interesting.
- Organize your list in the order of interest. The most interesting will be first on the list.
- Use the first subject in the list as your topic.
- Ask your teacher for approval of your topic before you begin any other work.

Review!
- Before writing a research paper, create an interest inventory for possible report topics. You may want to consult with others for ideas.
- An appropriate topic for a research paper is "just right," not too small or too large.
- Open-ended research questions guide research.
- When you create a plan on how to gather information on your research question, it makes writing the research project much easier.
- Carefully record information when taking notes. Take notes in your own words and do not plagiarize. Always record the source information.

Project: Outline
Type an outline in a Word Document for your original report. (Use the approved topic from the earlier lesson, which should be the one you made note cards for.)
You MUST type your outline in a Word Doc or you will be asked to do it over. Submit the original document file so I can add notes to it. : )
Properly use Roman numerals and capital letters in the outline. Include at least two main points, but you may have no more than three. Each main point should have at least an A and a B but you may have a C and D if needed. Do not break it down anymore than this for this assignment. Include the title of your report along with an introductory or topic sentence and a conclusion or closing sentence. (See example below.)
For this assignment you also need to draw out a graphic organizer (click on it to see an example, but draw your own). Begin with a circle in the middle of your page with the topic written there. From the main circle (topic) draw three lines out. At the end of each line, draw another circle. In each of those circles write the main idea of each of your paragraphs. Beside each main idea write out at least TWO details. This is just like an informal outline that you could use to organize the information to write your paper. Type your outline in a Word document and submit it in OW. Send your graphic organizer to me in Skype.
Remember to use proper capitalization. Main ideas are capitalized the same as titles. For sub topics (details A. B. etc) capitalize just the first word.
Mrs. Wilt's Example Outline -
Title: Making an Outline
Topic Sentence: There are many things to remember when making an outline.
I. Capitalize Main Ideas Like a Title
A. Capitalize just the first letter in sub-points
B. Do not write in complete sentences
II. Do Not Use Complete Sentences for Main Ideas
A. Use phrases instead
B. No periods on phrases
III. Only Include III if it is Needed
A. Main point needs both an A and a B or it is not needed
B. If there is an A there must be at least a B
Closing Sentence: Having everything properly placed will help make essay writing go smoothly.
