two small potted plants or bean seedlings
a box big enough to cover one plant
a sunny window

View the slide slideshow on the OW page. Using your observations from pictures, describe how the seed changes each day. Use complete sentences to describe what happened on the first day, and through the rest of the growing process that is shown. Be sure to click through each slideshow and to click on the small arrow at the bottom of the picture to listen to the audio part of the slideshow as well.
I encourage you to plant lima beans on your own sometime when you have some extra time! It is a fun thing to do, and it cool to observe just like a real scientist does. :) If you do plant some I would love to hear about it and see pictures!! :) Use complete sentences and check your spelling. :)

Experiment: Plant a Piece of Potato (10)
You have learned how plants grow from roots, stems, and seeds. In this experiment you will watch a potato grow. (Think about it! What does a potato grow from?) Carefully follow the directions of the OW page and answer the questions in the OW essay box.
You will need the following materials.
a white potato (one with "eyes" on it)

You will need the following materials.
a jar with water
five paper cups
fifteen lima beans
potting soil
wet paper towel
Directions:
Follow these directions.
- Put the beans in the jar of water.
- Keep them in the water until the next day.
- Take one of your bean seeds from the jar.
- Crack it open.
- On a separate sheet of paper, draw a picture of the opened bean in a box marked "First Day."
- Wrap the remaining beans in the wet paper towel.
- Wait two days.
- Take another bean seed from the towel.
- Crack it open.
- Observe the tiny sprout inside it.
- On the same sheet of paper as the last, draw a picture of the opened bean and the tiny sprout. A sprout is the tiny part of a plant that starts to grow into a new plant. Make your drawing in a box marked "Third Day."
- Wait three more days.
- Take out another bean.
- Crack it open.
- Look at the sprout inside this bean seed.
- On the same sheet of paper, draw a picture of this opened bean in a box marked "One week."
- Look back over your drawings. Notice the changes that have taken place.
- Now fill each cup a little more than half full of potting soil.
- Take five beans from the paper towel.
- Plant one in each of the cups.
- Set the cups near a window where it is warm and light.
- Check on your cups every two or three days. Water if needed.
- Ask an adult to help you find a nice place to plant your lima bean plants. Plant them outside if the weather is warm. Plant them inside in a large pot or box if it is too cold. You and your parents can watch your plants grow.
