UNIT 9
Assignment 3. Volume
Watch the video to see how to complete the experiment. Use the measurements from the video to help you answer the questions. You should also complete the experiment on your own so you can see how it works on your own as well.
Answer the following questions.
1. Why did the water level change when he dropped the marbles in the water?
2. Which of his marbles caused the most change?
3. Compare the volume of the two marbles. (Include the volume of each rock from the video and compare them.)

Follow the directions and watch the video. Answer the questions in the OW box. :)
This should be a fun experiment!!
You can use different shaped bottles or containers you have at home.
1. Draw a picture of each different container on a separate sheet of paper.
2. Pour one baby-food jar full (or you may use a 1/4 size measuring cup) of water into each container.
3. In each of your drawings, shade in the area that contains the water. (You will need to email me the picture when you submit your answers.) :)
Look at the bottles or containers you use.
1. Compare the water level in each of the containers. (Write how the water level in each bottle compares with the other ones.)
2. Compare the volume of water in each of the containers. Was the volume of water the same or different in each? *Think about the meaning of volume.
3. Compare the shape of the water in each of the containers. Explain in words.
4. Why is the water level different for some of the containers? Explain.
5.What does this experiment show about the liquid form of matter? It shows that liquid..... (finish the explanation).
Assignment: 6. Experiment: Types of Changes
Watch the video. Answer the questions. ONLY do this experiment WITH a parent! (Safety first!)
1. What happens to the candle after it burns for a bit?
2. What happens to the plate when it is held close to the flame?
3. What caused this to happen? (Go back and listen to Stanley's explanation if you are not sure.)
4. What kind of changes does this show is happening?
List whether it is a physical or a chemical change for each individual one.
(Hint: Listen to Stanley as he explains this at the end and then answer A - D in the OW box.)
A. Wax to liquid = physical OR chemical change?
B. Wax burned = physical OR chemical change?
C. Vapor to water =
D. Blackened = physical OR chemical change?
Assignment: 13. Project: Globe
Watch the video. In a few sentences talk about the sun and the earth's rotation to explain why the seasons change.
Assignment: 16. Project: Comets
Choose one of these comets or discoveries. Read as much as possible about your choice.
Respond to the following.
Name of my choice:
Type a report about the comet or the person who discovered it. It should be at least two paragraphs. Make sure to have a topic sentence (introduction) and a concluding sentence to tie it all together at the end. :)
Assignment: 19. Experiment: Evaporation
Follow the directions on the project page. This will take you one week to complete. The day you begin this please leave an Ask for Help note on the assignment to let me you have started it.
Make a chart to record your data. Include the date and amount of water for each pan. You will need to upload your chart to the OW file area when you complete the experiment.
Answer the following questions in the OW box.
1. What happened to the amount of water in each pan?
2. What do the results of this experiment show about water evaporation?
